A Message from Dr. Michael Hansen, Active Physical Therapy Physical Therapist
- It's common to believe that back pain is insignificant and will simply go away on its own. It's also usual to blame it on "awkward sleeping," a "spasm," or something "everyone" suffers from at some point...
- There is no obvious reason for it, but it does not appear to be changing!
- If this is happening to you, you are not alone; we hear stories like this all the time. In fact, the most common problem we see in our clinic is Lower Back Pain and Sciatica.
- And when it comes to dealing with back pain, everyone we meet wants to know…
“Why Is This Happening To Me?” Or, “Why Am I Still Suffering With Back Pain After Putting Up With It For 3-6 Months? (Sometimes More!)
Most people believe that if they have back pain, it will go away all on its own.
They believe that if they wake up one morning, it will be as if the back pain never existed… But 6 months later, you’re still suffering from back pain, which is frequently worse than when it first began.
Does That Sound Like You?
Another scenario that we see frequently in our clinic is when people visit the Doctor and are told to rest and “try these painkillers” and “see how it goes.”
However, this is rarely the best advice, and many people end up returning to the doctor after 4 weeks because things haven’t improved. What’s worse, they’re frequently given another prescription for stronger pills and told to rest even MORE. This is absurd, and it explains why so many people in the United States suffer from chronic lower back pain.
Has This Type Of Thing Happened To You?
What else could explain why back pain lasts longer than it should? It’s easy to become perplexed because you’ve been told far too many different things by various different people. There are plenty of people willing to offer advice, but much of it is rarely reliable.
Perhaps you believe your back pain was caused by something you did, such as lifting or sleeping in an awkward position, but it was actually caused by many years of poor posture and poor movement, which caused the muscles in your lower back to become weak, and the lifting or uncomfortable sleeping position was just the EFFECT of that.
Back pain can be very confusing if you don’t know what you’re doing, and as a result, many people just accept it as a ‘part of life,’ as if it’s normal and ‘just the way it is.’
Do You Feel That Way Too?
If You’re Currently Living With Back Pain, Here’s 7 More Reasons Why It Could Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:
1. You expected it to go away on its own, but it didn’t.
2. You went to the doctor, who advised you to rest and take pain relievers, but the pills had no effect on your back, and once they wore off, chronic back pain returned.
3. You just accepted it because a family member or friend told you that everyone gets back pain as they grow older.
4. You’ve previously tried other Healthcare Professionals or a Physical Therapist, but nothing they said or did seemed to work.
5. You started trying YouTube exercises, but they either didn’t work or made your back pain worse.
6. You probably thought resting would ease your back pain, but it only made your muscles feel more stiff and tight.
7. You decided to get a few “massages” in the hopes that they would relieve your pain, but all they did was make you feel nice and relaxed and did nothing to help you in the long run.
If any of these things have happened to you, we’d love to help you by inviting you to schedule a call with our low back specialist to find out how we might be able to help you. The fact that you’ve tried any or all of these things is actually a GOOD THING because knowing what doesn’t work brings you closer to discovering what does!
“What Can I Do To Get Rid Of My Back Pain Quickly?”...
So The Next Question Is:
First and foremost, you must decide whether or not to seek assistance: Many people procrastinate for so long, believing that back pain will ‘just go away with time,’ only to find that 6 months later, nothing has changed…or it has gotten worse.
Next, do the RIGHT exercises: One of the best things you can do to help relieve your back pain is to do the right series of progressed exercises – the right exercises given to you by a Physiotherapist will help to reduce pain, allow you to move freely again quickly, and ensure that the problems don’t return anytime soon (or aggravate your back even more like some exercises do).
Avoid sitting and long periods of rest: Have you ever tried to get up from the sofa after a long period of resting, only to struggle because your back is so painful and tight? That’s because resting or sitting for long periods of time is one of the worst things you can do to aggravate back pain. Too much rest, as well as sitting in awkward positions, causes your back to stiffen and tighten. It would be extremely beneficial if you were given the correct strengthening exercises for better posture, in addition to hands-on treatment, in order to get you active and healthy as soon as possible.
Get real, “hands-on” Physical Therapy: Back Pain Physical therapy has been shown to help people suffering from low-back pain. “Michael is the best! I have worked with Michael for over a year and the progress and growth shows inside and outside the gym. His knowledge and understanding of CrossFit performance allows him to connect and understand challenges and difficulties that we have and he works with us so we can keep going! 1000% recommend him for any PT need.”
- Lindsay S.
“My experience with Michael has fully exceeded my expectations. I originally reached out for shoulder pain and have since worked on knee pain as well. I went from minimal movement without pain to being able to do pushups again. There is a huge benefit and advantage in having a professional explain concepts, movements, and ensure the correct muscle groups are being activated.”
- Luke D.
“Michael helped me come back from double heel “fracture” (they were pulverized). His attention to detail and amazing hands-on care for my feet helped me get the flexibility and comfort and confidence I needed each session to make progress, start walking(!) and more. Now I understand what healthy walking looks like for me and my feet, and I am equipped to keep pushing for 100% recovery. We were doing (safe) box jumps last week, I didn’t expect to be able to do that!”
